Executive Interns was started, like many great ideas, to fill a need.
My name is Dave Charbonneau, founder of Applied Prosperity, LC (the company behind E.I.); and I'm a serial entrepreneur (I know, sounds like Entreprenuers' Anonymous). I simply had too many ideas to keep up with. Repeatedly, I would see "my" ideas come to market within 12 to 36 months after I had that first creative spark. Only, somebody I'd never met was the one producing them.
Short story version: I called up a company known for hiring interns and spoke with one of the full-time employees. He started as an intern.
"So you worked for this guy for no financial compensation and now you're a full-time employee? What would make you want to do that?" I asked. He told me that he was attracted to the internship because he could actually have a say in how the company was run (instead of being the gopher), and because the company created social benefits beyond the profits of the owners; for every sale they made, there were obvious benefits provided to a good cause.
This interview really struck a chord with me. Here I had all these projects, any one of them could take off and be the next big thing. I was already moving my business projects toward creating wealth for charitable causes outside the projects themselves. All I needed was some help; some ambition; and a 'youthful' perspective of college students or recent grads might just add fuel to this fire, as well.
I hauled off and did 'not-much'. Again, Executive Interns was one of the many concepts I had that was a great idea and, due to time and priority of other projects, was sitting on the shelf. Here's what happened next: I saw that my business associates had similar needs, and one of them had even made her way through college as an intern. Soon after this discovery, I met Jennifer Hall Goodwin of InternetGirlFriday.com, who was already seeking interns. Here was someone who actually had as many ideas and concepts on her plate as I did (and finding herself in a similar position). She and her ideas gave me yet another boost of energy to get this site up and running.
With gentle pushes and shoves from Jennifer, A.J. from Success Coach Technlologies, MaryPat from Shared Vision Network, and Christophe (all the way from France) with International Network of Social Entrepreneurs, you're looking at the beginning of a business that is serving businesses all over North America and soon, the world.
What you'll see in the very near future, to be in line with the E.I. business model, an intern, or team of interns, will run this company with myself acting as the chairman.
